Consultation on National Occupational Standards for
Journalism

Journalism is going through a period of unprecedented change. New and emerging technologies, the convergence of traditional media, the growth of social media and the changing nature of the relationship between journalists and the public are all factors. This has created great opportunities and even greater challenges – particularly in terms of the knowledge and skills required of contemporary journalists.

The Journalism Standards intend to cover the essential skills, knowledge and competencies that are fundamental to different roles throughout the various sectors of the UK media in a converged world. This is your chance to feed back and let us know if this first draft of the Standards accurately reflects your area of work.

Please look at the ‘key areas’ of Journalism below, and click the links to download the related Standards in PDF format. Alternatively, you can download here a PDF of the full suite of these Standards: Draft NOS - Journalism

You'll need Adobe Reader to view the PDFs - if you don't have it, click here to download Adobe Reader.

A very short questionnaire below offers you a chance to provide your feedback.
